A Typical Forest Atelier Session
Welcome and Introductions
Recap of our Forest Atelier agreements with the children around their safety, kindness towards others and the environment, and independent problem-solving before seeking help.
Introduction of loose parts, tools and materials at their disposal.
Forest Walk
During this time, facilitators will point out interesting plants, animal tracks, or other natural features that might catch the children’s attention.
We invite questions, but let children decide whether they want to observe, touch, smell or investigate something further.
Free Exploration and Discovery
Throughout the day, facilitators are taking photos/videos and recording the children’s actions, words and interests. In addition to recording each of the children’s skill development over time, we do this to follow up on ideas for future activities, materials to introduce, or ways to expand on the child’s interest.
Creative Time and Focused Exploration
Facilitators build on each child's interests observed during free exploration. Materials and tools are thoughtfully provided to encourage creativity and deeper inquiry. For example, a child fascinated by leaves might explore leaf rubbings or nature art, while another interested in insects could examine specimens with magnifiers. Facilitators guide gently with open-ended questions, fostering curiosity and collaboration. This structured yet flexible time allows children to express themselves creatively, make connections, and engage deeply with their discoveries in a supportive and inspiring environment.
Forest Bathing Meditation
Meditation encourages mindfulness, relaxation, and a sense of connection to nature. We invite children to set aside 5 minutes to pay attention to the sights, smells, sounds and textures all around them. Instead of a formal guided meditation, we allow children to participate as they like.
Closing Reflection Circle
We encourage the children to share their thoughts, ideas, or creations from the day, fostering a sense of ownership and pride. We acknowledge our feelings from the session and focus on positive moments to reinforce gratitude and joy. The circle provides a calm, supportive space for children to express themselves, listen to others, and reflect on their learning journey.
